Planned exhibition “Beware of fire! The 400-Year History of Firefighting in Gifu”

종료

August 3 (Sat) – September 16 (Mon & Holiday), 2024

Firefighting, which protects lives and livelihoods from fires and disasters, has a history dating back to the Edo period. There is a saying that goes (literal translation): “Fires and fights are the flowers of Edo, and firemen are also the flowers of Edo,” which puts emphasis on the well-known activities of firefighters in the era. Similarly, in Gifu during that era, the presence of firefighters was indispensable. Through the establishment of modern firefighting organizations and the civil defense corps, the contemporary firefighting system called “jichitai shobo (municipal firefighting)” was developed in the post-war period. This exhibition gathers firefighting tools and historical materials from the Edo period onwards, preserved in Gifu City and the surrounding areas, tracing the history of firefighting in Gifu.
