Museum’s Choice “The Beautiful World of Gifu Lanterns”

Gifu lanterns are a proud traditional craft of Gifu City, along with Gifu wagasa umbrellas and Gifu fans. These are made of Japanese washi paper and bamboo, which the Mino region has been known for since ancient times. They are still handmade by craftsmen. In 1995, Gifu lanterns were designated as a National Traditional Craft, and even today it boasts one of the largest market shares in Japan.
Gifu lanterns are characterized by their delicate and elegant finish. Thin Japanese washi paper or silk is stretched over thin bamboo strips. This exhibition will explore the world of beautiful Gifu lanterns through a variety of the museum's collection, as well as the actual lantern-making tools and historical materials.
